**No key needed to start.** With `TYPESAFE_API_KEY` empty, the Function serves mock rulings: deterministic for each food and shaped exactly like live answers, but not real. The app shows a demo banner and stamps every card "Simulated". For UI work without wrangler, `pnpm --filter @cube/web dev:mock` adds trigger foods for every state, such as `mock torn`, `mock 429` and `mock timeout` (see [docs/ux-spec.md]).
